It’s no news to anyone with a brain that the rules of life are quite a bit different when it comes to celebrities. The stars of our culture seem to be able to get away with quite a lot more than their non-luminous counterparts, from evading hit-and-run charges to skirting multi-million dollar bankruptcies with nary a court appearance to slow them down. The newest story of a celebrity engaging in behavior that would get any of the rest of us arrested comes from Hollywood – naturally – and the famous pop tart Britney Spears. Whether you love or hate the volatile starlet, you can’t deny that she definitely has a way of keeping herself in the news.
Renowned virtual gossip rag TMZ reported today that Spears may or may not have stolen her bodyguard’s credit card to commit fraud. A bit of background: Spears has not had control of her own finances since 2007, the point at which her father Jamie Spears was appointed financial conservator on her behalf after Britney had a huge, public meltdown in the days following her separation from then-husband Kevin Federline. Jamie keeps Britney on a pretty tight leash for a pop star, allowing her only fifteen hundred dollars a week in credit card use before she is cut off. This reportedly chafes hard at the spendthrift Spears, who, like so many American women, loves to do some serious shopping.
According to TMZ, Britney was reportedly out to buy two pairs of new boots at the famous Steve Madden shoe store. Unfortunately, she had already run out of her allowance for the week. Unwilling to take “no” for an answer, Spears allegedly swiped the closest available plastic, which just so happened to belong to one of her omnipresent bodyguards. Spears signed the card with her own name, and told the skeptical clerk that she was entitled to use the card.
