If you think there’s a chance that you might want a pillow or blanket to make your trip more comfortable next time you fly, then there’s something you’d better pack in your carry-on luggage alongside your regulation-sized Ziploc bag of tiny toiletries and a change of clothing in case your suitcase gets lost – a credit card. Reflecting the new trend towards a la carte pricing in all facets of domestic air travel, American Airlines announced today that it is planning on taking its signature red blankets out of the coach section on all North American flights. Starting the first day of May, fliers taking journeys of more than two hours in length will have the option to purchase a pillow and blanket in a travel bag for eight dollars – payable with plastic, of course.
The removal of the gratis pillows and blanket loaners in coach was called a “strategic” decision for American Airlines by its spokeswoman, Andrea Huguely. She cited the carrier’s optimism that the move would be “prudent… for the long-term success of [the] company.” The policy change will affect all coach passengers taking flights within the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico. Those fliers in either business or first class will still be offered pillows and blankets at no charge, as will all passengers taking international flights.
The eight dollar purchase will include a blue fleece blanket and an inflatable neck pillow. As a bonus for their credit card purchase, fliers will also receive a ten dollar coupon for Bed, Bath & Beyond. American follows in the footsteps of competitors Jet Blue and US Airways, both of whom have already been charging for comfort.
