The Hazards of V-Day Spending Posted in by Stephanie

Valentine’s Day is coming up quickly, what with it being the end of January. Sweethearts of America, I am telling you now to lock up your credit cards! If you have a special someone in your life – especially if you are a man – it can be so easy to run up exorbitant charges on your plastic in the quest to get the big day just right.

Look at any store you visit right about now. Boxes of chocolate, bottle of wine, taper candles to give a romantic glow – all of these things cost money! Never mind taking your beloved out to dinner on the 14th, if you can even get a reservation at this late date! Many dining establishments charge premium prices for meals on this day, meaning that you will pay big bucks for a meal that is very likely to be unspectacular, given how jammed the kitchen is! I implore you to give your sweetheart a kiss, and nothing more. The best things in life, including love, are free.

Another note for the gentlemen out there: if you have been seeing someone steadily for a few years and are thinking of a romantic and timely Valentine’s Day proposal of marriage: DON’T, unless you have the ring already! Knowing that this is prime season for engagements, many jewelry stores jack up the prices on inferior-quality gem, thinking that love-stricken men desperate to get the timing right won’t notice. Wait until March, and THEN pop the question! Your credit card will thank you, and your beloved will be too swept off her feet to car about the calendar.
